Inspection at the Temple

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a very original book release event. I have been to numerous book events, but no one puts on an event like Josh Malerman. I was fortunate enough to be in the audience for the “reading” from Malerman’s previous book Bird Box at our local library.1 I put the word reading in quotations because it was so much more than just a reading. It more like a multi-media event. Malerman is also a musician.2 The reading from Bird Box was accompanied by music and sound effects.

Oh, did I mention that the audience was blindfolded?

I have not read Malerman’s new book yet,
Inspection, yet.5 However, after this event, I can not wait to dive into the book. The release event was held at Detroit’s Masonic Temple, one of my favorite places in the area.6 The building is absolutely beautiful, and in the gloomy darkness, it’s the perfect place for a creepy reading. Mallerman shared numerous portions of the new book, the scenes acted out by actors with giant papier mache heads. The music was there too, definitely augmenting the performance. In one particular area, the reading was accompanied by drums which gradually increased in tempo and volume, mirroring the heartbeat of the character and everyone in the audience.

I don’t want to say much more, for fear of accidental spoilers. All I will say is that Mallerman was amazing, as were all of the performers. He was also very gracious and friendly while autographing copies of his books.

There are pictures from the event on my Instagram account if you are interested.

1 I say “our” because Malerman lives in the same town that I do.

2 In case you didn’t know.

3 If you’ve read
Bird Box or seen the recent Netflix movie, you’ll understand why.4

4 If you haven’t, for Cthulhu’s sake, go read it!

5 It was just released. It’s right up at the top of my To Read List.

6 I have toured the Temple, attended a wedding, a Prince concert, and multiple roller derby meets there.
